Women are dying in Kerr Memorial Hospital. They are dying at an alarming rate from post-operative wound infections which are resistant to antibiotics and the authorities cannot find the source of the problem. As the situation threatens to get out of control, the hospital staff are under mounting pressure and nerves are stretched to breaking point.

The Home Office send an outsider, surgeon Scott Jamieson, to investigate and Jamieson soon finds himself in a maelstrom of accusation and counter-accusation. Is this outbreak the result of deliberate contamination or just a freak strain of bacteria? As he tiptoes through a minefielf of explosive personalities, Jamieson begins to suspect that the truth might be far more horrific than anyone could have imagined in their worst nightmares.

Ken McClure is the internationally bestselling author of over twenty medical thrillers such as The Lazarus Strain, The Gulf Conspiracy, White Death and Dust to Dust. His books have been translated into twenty-three languages and he has earned a reputation for the accuracy of his predicitions. McClure's work is informed by his background as an award-winning research scientist with the UK's Medical Research Council.

This book was first published by Simon & Schuster Ltd. (UK) in 1994

Author's note -

This title introduced the concept of the Sci-Med Inspectorate - a small investigative unit located in the UK Home Office - which was to become the basis for my Dr Steven Dunbar series of novels.

CHAMELEON edition by Ken McClure Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

I'm unfamiliar with this author's work, but enjoyed the novel.

Except for a noir novel I read a while ago, I can't remember a protagonist who gets hurt as much as young Dr. Jamieson does. First the car crash that ends his surgical career, then a harrowing episode involving a heater (which apparently really was an accident, not an early attempt to kill him), then getting beaten up by punks ("yobs"), then...But he soldiers on with true British grit.

A few quibbles: the text was riddled with punctuation errors, e.g. "That's what I said doctor." The wife is in peril, not once, but TWICE, whereupon the text breaks out into frantic exclamation points! Only one lulu: a man with his hands bound behind him can, a few sentences later, put his head in his hands....and is still bound a paragraph or two after that. The ending feels a bit rushed, but I was clueless as to the killer's identity until about 3/4 of the way through, when the author coyly includes the name in a sentence, describing an incident that doesn't click with Dr. J at the time.

CHAMELEON edition by Ken McClure Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I really like that Ken McClure uses accurate, sensible medical information and facts in his novels. It really shows that he is an MD with extensive research and microbiology experience. Chamelion is another good example.
I am a loyal devotee of your writing Ken McClure. Your titles never disappoint.
Great book. I could not put it down!
Love. Love. Love
This is the second Ken McClure book I've read. This was also very well written, with a good mystery and good characters. The book kept me guessing for a while and I especially liked the way McClure has balanced characters that you identify with.
Overall, I'd recommend this for anyone that likes something that will keep their interest and engage their mind and feelings.
This the the seventh book of Ken McClure I read and each one has been fantastic. This particular story is incredibly suspenseful, with a plot that keeps you turning the pages, unable to put it down. I loved this book of Mr. McClure. Great story; I recommend it fully and without reservations to all those who love to read the medical thriller genre. You will not be disappointed. Mr. McClure has managed once more to write a great story and immerse us into the horrors that misapplied technology can bring us. Totally mesmerizing!
Only three stars for this book, kind of introduction to Sci-Med using a predecessor to Dr. Dunbar, my favorite.

The reviews quoted from UK papers of that time (the nineties of the last century) claim this to be a 'plausible' story. I do not think so conceivable but not plausible for many reasons I do not want to to disclose here.

Basically, too many villains of different kinds in one place at the same time. The science may be plausible - I have never been a biological scientist - but statistically implausible for the sake of creating super red herrings (or red super-herrings?).

Well, authors usually need some time to hone their trade and this is definitely a testament to it.

Before your buy any McClure book, look at the date of its ORIGINAL publication in UK, not the date of the e-book edition. Unless, of course, you want to follow author's progress.
