The Chronicles of Clovis Saki 9781481981521 Books

Just for the record, The Chronicles of Clovis has nothing whatever to do with the legendary French king. It is a collection of 30 extremely wry and witty short stories written by the inimitable Saki (the pen name for H.H. Munro). The setting is in the midst of upper class English society during the Edwardian Period, the period between the Boer War and World War when the British Empire reached it's peak. Devotees of Downton Abbey will find themselves on familiar ground, save for the slightly disconcerting presence of Clovis. Clovis Sangrail, the nominal central character about whom these stories revolve, is a typical Saki hero: young, vain, effete, worldly, slightly cruel, a bit decadent and extremely witty.

Included in this collection are some of Saki's very best works, including "Mrs. Packleetide's Tiger", "The Background", "The Jesting of Arlington Stingham", "Tobermory", "Sredni Vastar", "The talking-Out of Tarrington", "Filboid Studge" and "The Secret Sin of Septimus Brope".

Both Saki, and the world about which he wrote so well, came to an end during with World War I. Nevertheless, few writers have ever been able to achieve Saki's level of irony, satire, wit and sophistication. It was a terrible loss, both to Britain and the reading public everywhere, when Saki was killed on the Western Front in 1916.

The Chronicles of Clovis Saki 9781481981521 Books Reviews

Clever and witty.
This is my first book by Saki, and he reminds me of Mark Twain. Except his cynicism is cranked up a bit. His humor is the same style of irreverence exhibited by Twain. It's the making fun of the basic assumptions of society, and a comprehensive contempt of all the polite usages in general. Very good humor for those that appreciate that style.
Clovis is a real character and a fun person with an answer for everything. Never serious but alway funny.
A few really great stories (The Easter Egg and Shredni Vashtar for example) and many good stories.
Be careful about reading this book on a plane or in public. Saki still possesses the power to make you laugh out loud and those near you will wonder about you. An unforgettable commentary on the times and on human nature.
Saki was one of A. A. Milne's favourites, and this speaks volumes for his quality & is enough reason alone for you to pick him up. There's a rather lovely Edwardian sensibility to his work although with the benefit of history, the clouds of the Great War loom on the horizon of several of the short stories. Well worth keeping on your to repeatedly dip into. The "Folio Society" editions of his work are very well made, often available 2nd-hand via & are fine additions to any library.

I love Saki. These are some of the best, most biting, hilarious gems ever written in the English language. However, the edition is so hard to read, that I must subtract two stars for the formatting.

The edition is very hard to read because of the awkward line breaks and kerning. I believe the digitization of this book to have been untouched by human hands, with no proofreading at all. Some lines have four words evenly spaced out to each margin. In other instances, a hyphenated word will have an additional hyphen inserted midway to make a line break. Other pages have "widows or orphans", a solitary word on one page. Each time I encounter one of these, the eye and the brain go "Ker-thunk!" an it spoils the sense and rhythm of the story.

Not worth even the low price; too many aggravations.
